Update #3 from Jonah, 25 Oct
Hi, Everybody!
After the Nurse Practioner's evaluation around noon, Mom seemed to be having difficulty breathing. The saline-dextrose drip was stopped.
At 1pm Dr D'Agostino, chief of the thoracic team, came by. He checked the chest tube drainage and said that they might have to repeat the procedure. Sarah pointed out that the second procedure was done last night. I thought I heard him said, "Oh." He marked the container and said that we have to monitor the drainage closely. He confirmed that hospice will take patients with chest tubes.
We paged for the nurse at 2:15pm She brought in 4 mg of morphine but the moaning stopped. We decided to give only 2 mg at first. When that didn't reduce the moaning we asked her to use the other 2 mg.
Sue from Community Hospice came and also confirmed that they will take Mom with the chest tube in. She helped Amelia turn Mom on to her left side.
At 4pm Mom's blood pressure was 91/63. Dr Vu came by at 4:15. Mom was moaning quite loudly. He said that cancer can lower one's pain tolerance and Mom could be feeling the cancer pain besides the discomfort caused by the chest tube and the pleurodesis procedure. He asked me to sign an DNR form for hospice but assured us that Mom will not be moved until the chest tube situation is concluded.
Amelia gave Mom 4 mg of morphine at 4:25. They cleaned Mom up and gave her a shampoo.
Another shot of morphine at 6:45. They resumed the saline-dextrose drip with anti-biotics. Mom is moaning quite loudly but seems comfortable otherwise. Her breathing is labored with some wheezing.
Take care. Love,
jonah
